On line tutorials

The following are tutorials I created to walk you through concepts and problems. I strongly recommend that you watch the first set of tutorials (gold background) as they are directly relevant to class materials. The second set (gray background are general interest tutorials of lesser importance to exam and quiz performance. The tutorials I created for the Lehninger text are also useful.

1. General strategy for working buffer problems

2. Buffer problem example 1: You have a 0.1 M solution of a weak acid and it’s conjugate base ([HA] + [A-] = 0.1 M) buffered at pH 7.4. The pKa for the weak acid is 6.8. What are the concentrations of HA and A- in this solution?

3. Buffer problem example 2: You need to prepare 0.5 liters of a 0.2 M solution of MOPS (Morpholino-propanesulfonic Acid) buffer with a pH of 7.6 at 25 C°. The pKa for MOPS buffer is 7.20. What mass of MOPS free acid (the “HA” form of MOPS, Mr = 209.3) and what volume of 6M NaOH must be combined with water to make this solution properly?
